• The -t ending that is common for the third person singular (er/sie/es) is NOT added for the modal verbs.

Modal verbs are used to express feelings, abilities and obligations. They are used with an infinitive of another verb.

An exception is “möchten”, which can also be used on its own in sentences like:

  • Ich möchte eine Bratwurst (kaufen/essen). – I would like (to buy/eat) a fried sausage.

The modal verb comes second and has to match the subject of the sentence. The infinitive comes last and does not change regardless of the subject.

Man muss mehr zu Fuß gehen.
One must walk more.

Du sollst nicht so viel mit dem Auto fahren.
You shouldn’t drive the car so much.

Wir können mehr recyceltes Papier benutzen.
We can use more recycled paper.

In complex sentences with conjunctions, the modal verb is pushed to the end of the clause or the end of the sentence.

  • Mein Mann fährt zweimal in der Woche mit dem Fahrrad zur Arbeit, weil er das Auto nicht benutzen kann, Benzin sparen muss und die Umwelt schützen will.
  • Wenn du nicht mit dem Fahrrad fahren willst, dann geh doch zu Fuß zur Schule.
